Better Globe’s education and school activities
It is quite impossible to develop or reform a country without educating the people of that country. Corruption and inequality thrive where there is poverty and ignorance. In Uganda, where we operate, adult literacy rate is 70%, and a third of the population live below the UN poverty standard. Less than 10% of girls and boys aged 15-19 have completed the seven-year primary school.
Many people consider education to be the best way to escape poverty. Consequently, we invest in Better Globe’s substantial resources to support education and develop training activities in areas where we conduct our business. Our primary goal is to help fund projects to build or repair schools.
It is still very common for children in Africa to contribute to the household, and schools are seldom tuition-free as they are in other parts of the world. Many adults simply cannot afford to let their children attend school. We create salaried jobs for the locals at our plantations which indirectl enables their children to to to schools and hence improve their future.
Child Africa—our sister organization
Child Africa was established in 1991 and is an NGO (non-governmental organization), registered in Kenya, Uganda, and Norway. It is involved in school activities and mentoring for children primarily in Uganda, but Child Africa has also built schools in Kenya for children who are severely disadvantaged and who otherwise would be unable to go to school. Child Africa, like most charities, depends on support from companies, and organizations, and private individuals. Such assistance is needed for teachers’ salaries, books, and especially food and clothing for the children.
Child Africa’s schools and activities are known far beyond the borders of Uganda and Kenya, as children who have absolutely the worst conditionsfor learning at school are now actually able to perform on par with the best schools in the districts.
Integration of deaf children
Child Africa is also internationally famous through the integration of deaf and hearing-impaired children in a natural way. A non-discriminating educational policy is something we take for granted, but as far as we know this has not been done in any other part of the world.
Up to 20% of students in Child Africa’s schools are deaf, but everyone learns sign language and other ways to communicate with each other. For example, the organization Cambridge to Africa has shown great interest in the educational program and has sponsored it with mobile phones, enabling deaf and non-deaf children to communication with each other with text messages.
Child Africa focuses on building confidence and reinforcing the importance of basic values, all in line with the hope to eradicate poverty and corruption in Africa. Strong individuals who feel that the right way is the only way to do things are helping to overcome some of the really important and fundamental problems that exist in poor countries.
