10 trees and one free donation package per month, by Viggo
Viggo Wigler’s almost 12 years old, and since 2007 he has bought both a donation package and 10 trees each month. Viggo was one of the very first people to visit a Better Globe plantation in Kiambere, where he found his favorite tree—an additional impressive young Mukau tree—as seen in the picture above.
Viggo also sponsors a friend in Uganda, who attends school through Child Africa. His name is Bosco. Viggo has also been helped by his father to use Better Globe’s offer, and they receive their own donation package for free every month.
Viggo donates regularly and therefore receives 24 trees per year. He also has a standing subscription of 10 trees per month, each year adding 144 trees to his portfolio. When asked what he will do when he grows up, Viggo answers:
“I’ll play football and football professionals make a a lot of money. But you never know if you are good or so …. then I have all the trees in Africa as well. I really do not know how much I will earn, but I’ll probably have so that I can handle myself and my family anyway.”
The following data applies to Viggo:
| Viggo buys 10 trees each month for 15 euros per tree | € 150.00 |
He also buys a one donation package each month, which includes the following:
|
€ 49.00 |
| Total per month: | € 199.00 |
| Since he has recommended Better Globe to his friends, he receives his donation package for free: | € -49.00 |
| Grand total of 12 trees per month: | € 150.00 |
As Viggo gets his Donation packages free of charge from Better Globe each month, he will actually receive 150 euros per month for 12 trees; plus, he donates two trees, 500 liters/130 gallons of water, 1.50 euros for microfinance, and 1.50 euros for building schools every month!
Viggo’s expected return over time is then
| Year 0: | Viggo has a total cost of 12 x 150 euros | € – 1 800.00 |
| Year 1 – 4: | The 144 trees, that Viggo owns, are planted: | € 0.00 |
| Year 5 – 19: | 15% of 144 trees, multiplied by 15 euros for 15 years (i.e. 144 trees x 15 years x 15 euros x 15% gives an annual return of 324 euros per year for 15 years. | € +4 860.00 |
| Year 20: | The 144 trees are felled. Viggo will now have an expected return of 10 times the purchase price of 15 euros. | € +21 600.00 |
| Sum total expected return over 20 years: | € 24 660.00 | |
Summary
One can say that Viggo buys trees and donation packages each month throughout the year. Initially, he also paid 49 euros for the donation package, but since he has recommended six customers to Better Globe, this is now free. This means that Viggo buys trees for a total of 1 800 euros per year and for that he receives the following:
- 144 trees that he owns and can expect a return from
- 24 trees given away to people connected to the plantations
- 6000 liters of water, donated away to the people around plantations
- 18 euros to Better Globe school activities
- 18 euros to Better Globe microcredit services
- certificate certifying that he is carbon neutral
The return he can expect is as follows:
- From year 5 to year 20, he has an expected return from his 144 trees of about 324 euros per year. This means that after about 11 years, the dividend is larger then the invested amount.
- In year 20, his expected return is 21 600 euros.
- That is, his expected profit, after deducting the 1 800 euros he spent for trees is 24 660 euros.
As Viggo has done this since 2007, and plans to continue to do so, meaning that when he is 20 years old, he can expect an annual return of about 25 000 euros per year before taxes.
